A mixture of 40 mol% carbon disulfide (CS2) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is continuously distilled. The feed is 50% vaporized (q = 0.5). The top product from a total condenser is 95 mol% CS2, and the bottoms product from a partial reboiler is a liquid of 5 mol% CS2.
The column operated with a reflux ratio, L/D, of 4 to 1. The Murphree vapor efficiency is 80%.
(a) Calculate graphically the minimum reflux, the minimum boilup ratio from the reboiler, V/B, and the minimum number of stages (including reboiler).
(b) How many trays are required for the actual column at 80% efficiency by the McCabe-Thiele method?

I am having trouble finding lambda. I am trying to use the weight% from the previous problem to solve for the molar amounts of the vapor and liquid for the equation for lambda. Any suggestions?
my mistake this is for problem 7.42
Solve for your V/L ratio in terms of the reflux ratio that is given. You know that V/L=L/(L+D)
Find what L/(L+D) is in terms of R. Then you don't have to mess with the molar flow rates.
what are we supposed to do with the murphree efficiency?

When you move from the op line toward the equilibrium curve, the murphree vapor efficiency is the fraction of the distance that you move before stopping and bouncing back down tho the op line. So, when Emv = 100%, you step-off ALL the way over to the equilibrium curve. Here because Emv is just 80%, at each stage IN THE COLUMN (not the reboiler or partial condenser) you just go 80% of the distance to the eq curve.
This is easiest do accurately if you do it in Excel.
