HW 3 - p 4.48 - Extraction of Acetic Acid from Water Using Chloroform as the Solvent- 5 pts

A mixture of chloroform and acetic acid at 18oC and 1 atm is to be extracted with water to recover the acid.
(a) Forty-five kilograms of a mixture containing 35 wt% CHCl3 and 65 wt% acid is treated with 22.75 kg of water at 18oC in a simple one stage batch extraction. What are the compositions and weights of the raffinate and extract layers produced?
(b) If the raffinate layer from the above treatment is extracted with one-half its weight of water, what will be the compositions and weights of the new layers?
(c) If all the water is removed from this final raffinate layer, what will its composition be?

as a general rule, how close do we need to be for these answers? even when i try to be really accurate reading the graphs, i still am about 5% off, and im pretty sure im doing everything else right.

The goal is to make sure you know what you are doing.
It is tough to read these plots very accurately and some small errors cause major ones in the answers. Interpolating tie-lines can be tricky.
I cannot tell if you did the problem correctly from what you have told me. If you want to be sure, check the solutions later or come to my office hours or Joseph Wei's. We can clear this up quickly in person.

Hey, there was a typo in the hints. The answer to part (b) should be XE2,AA = 0.24. I had said this was XE2,CF.
